Back in the day many truly believed that doing the martial arts was all about self protection, defending the weak and vulnerable and being a warrior. Some even to this very day still believe that to be the case. However these days you will find many taking up the martial arts because their mate does it or it is a nice little hobby to have. And just a way to keep fit of course. In my case it was to look cool in front of the girls.
Many these days join martial art classes for the sport side of things, nothing wrong with that of course, or maybe to copy all those fancy moves and show off what they have learned to others, and dare I say, a vanity trip because they want people to think they are a superhero like in the movies. Strange thing but just look at how many who start the martial arts wishing to be a protector of the weak, and be a warrior, soon stop after a year at the most when faced with hard combat training. Most long term instructors will be aware of these things of course. They will be fully aware that hard work will stop many students after only a short period of time. In some, but not all cases, many instructors therefore will only teach a soft, gentle version of the combat arts to overcome the problem of students leaving after only one year at the most, or even after a month or even a day in some cases. So much for that warrior mentality and protecting the weak. To encourage new paying students and children some, so-called martial arts instructors, will therefore use such promotional advertising terms as ‘family friendly’ or set up martial art themed playgroups. These recruitment methods do work to a degree but if the new student, young or old, has the wrong mindset from the start then they will, just like many others, leave after a short period of time. Therefore having the correct mindset, regardless of what area of the fighting arts you are looking for, when taking up the martial arts for the first time is somewhat needed when starting out on that martial art path.
