Many will say that those good old vinyl records were far better than modern day CD’s and other methods of listening to music. In many ways that is more than true, however, it was not the vinyl record itself that was better but the way the sound was delivered to your ears.
Back in those early days the sound was more raw sounding which in turn made the music more natural and somewhat realistic. These days music is in digital form, and also processed before you hear it. Although the speakers have not changed that much over the years it is now processed through modern day technology before the sound comes out in other words. Although an advancement in sound quality it also turned the sound from being far more natural to something that some would call plastic in nature. There is also one other item to take into account, and that is the size, shape and material used to project that sound. The very old record deck was open, nothing surrounding it, and therefore nothing in the way for the sound to travel to your ears, and if you had a ‘Radiogram’ as some would call them back in the day then the acoustics were far better than being enclosed in a small plastic box. In somewhat simple terms the sound would echo off the surrounding container, more so if made from wood, and more spacious than those small Hi-Fi systems that are used these days. You could compare this to listening to a concert in a spacious arena with the sound bouncing off the walls. A vinyl record when all said and done is nothing more than an old fashioned music data storage device, it is the cabinet that makes that somewhat magical sound in the end. Just like listening to music at an open air concert the sound is not the same, it is more raw and not processed in the same way, which makes it all the more natural sounding. One additional item why those Vinyl records are still somewhat popular is that unlike music in digital format those records are like buying a book or a magazine, something that you can physically touch and put on a shelf. A collection of your favourite music complete with a cover illustration to make it all seem far more real than in digital format. Comments are closed.
