Years ago someone asked me how I would describe what category my website would come under? In all honesty I have no idea. Strange how people feel the need to have a category, or a specific name, for everything these days. For example, if you don’t follow a religion then they call you an atheist. Why give someone such a name just because you don’t follow that way of thinking?
You can name any subject, be it politics, sex etc.., and there is a name for it. Even the style of clothing that you wear is given a specific type of name or category. Anyway, back to the subject in question. I tend to call my website a publishing website because I publish articles on all sorts of things, mainly about the martial arts of course. However, this really did get me thinking when I was asked that question. I cannot be a magazine publisher, I thought to myself, because regardless if it is in digital format or in hard copy print the fact remains that a magazine is full of content written by many different people. I on the other hand only publish my own written work on my website. It cannot be a newspaper because yet again it is put together by many writers in the same way, plus of course newspapers tend to cover current or daily news updates, which is not what I do, therefore, as I am the only writer on my website I cannot come under the category of a newspaper or a magazine publisher. But what about a daily diary or maybe a blog? Both are more or less the same, however, the nature of a daily diary entry, compared to a blog, is that a diary is often all about writing down personal items or a form of reference entry for future use, therefore there was only one other main category that I could think of, a journal. Sadly things got somewhat complicated when I did some research on this subject because all those category names and writing titles do tend to be somewhat intermixed, I hasten to add at this point. A journal, for example, can be anything in nature. So far so good I thought to myself. A journal can be written by more than one person or just yourself, and used in many ways. From a specialist subject to even business items. This is looking good, I thought to myself again. A daily diary does tend to be a one man show in the main but a journal can be used in all sorts of ways. I write about all sorts of things, so I am a journal writer and my website is a journal, as I don’t specialise on just one subject only, but am I? To be totally honest I cannot really see myself in that way. Then I thought to myself maybe I am a book publisher? But then again no. A book is often just one specific subject in nature. A book is also often page after page that flows into each other often on the same subject like a story book does. So in the end I think I will stay with the site description of a publishing website, and what type of writer I am, that being an article writer and a publisher of my own written work. Although having come to that conclusion many will still say I am a blogger, due to the nature of what I write and the nature of my website, but I will always regard myself as a writer because I write articles, and always have done since the start of the 1980’s, which of course is what we were called back then long before websites came along and the term blogger came into existence due to the internet.
